Greg Miller’s versatile musical career has led him to performances at such venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX, as well as many college and university recital and concert halls throughout the United States. He has given solo recitals in Indiana and Texas, and has performed at several North American Saxophone Alliance Conferences (both as a solo performer and as a member of the Eric Nestler Saxophone Quartet). His musical experiences have included being the featured soloist with orchestra and jazz ensembles, performances with concert bands, saxophone quartets, big bands, blues bands, and jazz combos. He currently subs regularly on baritone saxophone for the Dallas Wind Symphony.
Described by world-renowned saxophonist Eugene Rousseau as “a talented saxophonist and dedicated teacher,” Mr. Miller has devoted his life to music performance and education. He has taught saxophone at Indiana University, the University of Texas-Brownsville campus, and the University of North Texas. His experience also includes teaching high school concert bands, marching bands, and jazz ensembles.
Mr. Miller is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone Performance with a related field in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Saxophone Performance and a Master’s degree in All Five Woodwinds with a cognate in Jazz Studies, both from Indiana University. As a student of Eugene Rousseau, he won the Indiana University Saxophone Concerto Competition and was a semi-finalist in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Indiana University Saxophone Quartet (an ensemble which premiered works by composers such as David Dzubay and James Aikman). He also won the Kokomo Symphony Concerto Competition, performing as guest soloist with the orchestra.
In addition to his duties at TCU (which includes teaching applied saxophone, the second semester of the woodwind techniques course, and coaching the TCU Saxophone Quartet), Mr. Miller maintains a saxophone studio in the Birdville and Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School Districts. He is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout Texas. His saxophone teachers have included Eric Nestler, James Riggs, Eugene Rousseau, Daniel Defayet, Kenneth Fischer, Malcolm Baker, Brian Minor, and Larry Kirkman; his clarinet teachers have included James Gillespie and Howard Klug; and he has studied jazz arranging/composition under Paris Rutherford.
His doctoral dissertation is focusing on the saxophone music of Frederick Fox.
