John Michael Hayes began his musical career as a Texas All-State Euphoniumist, graduating from Plano Senior High School in 1979. Mr. Hayes won the position of Second Trombone in 1982 with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra while completing his Bachelor of Music Degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Texas – Arlington. In 1996, Mr. Hayes was promoted to the position of Assistant Principal Trombone, the position he holds with the FWSO today. Mr. Hayes received a personal leave of absence from the FWSO to earn a Masters of Music Degree in Trombone Performance from Northwestern University studying with the foremost brass instructors of the modern era. His teachers include Frank Crisafulli, Professor of Trombone at Northwestern and section trombone with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Arnold Jacobs, Principal Tuba with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and renown expert on the human respiratory system; Edward Kleinhammer, Bass Trombonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Vincent Chicowitz, former section trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and considered North America’s foremost expert in brass pedagogy; and John Kitzman, Professor of Trombone at Southern Methodist University and Principal Trombone with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Hayes has performed with the critically acclaimed Millar Brass Ensemble of the Alice Millar Chapel in Evanston, Ill. and has performed with the Arlington Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra and Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Hayes can also be heard on the current Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra recordings “The Cliburn: Playing On The Edge”, “Carmina Burana” and award winning “A Prairie Portrait” and on Southwestern Seminary Oratorio Chorus recordings “Deo Gratias” and “ The Majesty Of Christmas”. Mr. Hayes continues to perform as a Dallas / Fort Worth freelance soloist, recently performing Arthur Pryor’s virtuoso solo for trombone “The Blue Bells Of Scotland” with the Legacy Christian Academy Band of Frisco, Texas.
