Michael Meckna, Professor of Music History
and Musicology, received his PhD from the
University of California at Santa Barbara
in 1984. His Virgil Thomson: a Bio-Bibliography
won a Choice Outstanding Academic Book award
in 1987. Previously he co-edited Austrian
Cloister Symphonists (1982), and in 1994 both
his book Twentieth-Century Brass Soloists
(Greenwood Press) and his edition of The Collected
Works of Alfred B. Sedgwick (Garland Press)
were published. His most recent publication
is Satchmo: the Louis Armstrong Encyclopedia.
Dr. Meckna's articles have appeared in American
Music, The Musical Quarterly, The Musical Times,
Neue Zeitschrift für Muzik, Oesterreichische
Musikzeitschrift, and numerous encyclopedias
including four of the Grove Dictionaries. He
currently serves as editor of the Greenwood Press "Celebrated
Musicians" series.
