
Sheila Allen, Professor of Voice and Division Chair of Vocal Studies, holds the BM from Oberlin Conservatory, MM, DMA, and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, and has studied in Stuttgart, Germany as a Fulbright scholar.
A pupil of Helen Boatwright, Lore Fischer, and Helen Hodam, she was a national finalist in both the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the NATS Artist Awards. Active as a recitalist and soloist in recital, operatic, and orchestral repertoire, she has performed roles with the Baltimore, Chautauqua, Eugene, Buffalo, and Rochester Opera Under the Stars Opera companies, appeared with the Buffalo Philharmonic and Syracuse Symphony and recorded for CRI, PBS, and Deutschlandfunk. She has appeared as a recitalist in various European venues, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the National Gallery of Art.
A champion of contemporary music, she has performed numerous premieres, including Stephen Albert’s To Wake the Dead, and those of some half dozen works written for her.
