Music History And Musicology at TCU

Music history and musicology permeate the music program at Texas Christian University and reach students from every other department in the University as well. Non-majors have the opportunity to take a general Survey of Music course or the alternative From Rock to Bach, as well as a Survey of Jazz and Popular Music and a class in World Music. For music majors, there is a three-semester of History of Music sequence, in addition to upper division courses covering the entire range of genres and eras. For those who wish to major in music history and musicology, there is a graduate program leading to the MM degree.

The Music Library

Located on the second floor of the Mary Couts Burnett Library, the Music Library houses over 22,000 scores, as well as a large collection of audio and visual materials in open stacks collections. Most materials are available for TCU students and staff to borrow. Other researchers may use the collection in-house.

The Music Library was developed to support graduate-level study and contains a remarkable collection of complete works, music reference works and monographs. Computers and printers are available for searching the general library catalog, the web, and to access numerous general and specialized online databases such as Music Index, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, International Index of Music Periodicals and RILM Abstracts of Music Literature. Document delivery and Interlibrary Loan augment research materials. The Audio/Media rooms are currently being renovated to add MIDI, expanded listening and viewing stations for all formats and seminar/teaching space. The School of Music archival recordings of recitals by students and faculty are available in the Music Library. The Special Collection Department of the library houses the Van Cliburn Archives.

Collegium Musicum

The Collegium is an organization for the performance of music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The School possesses three sets of recorders, a quartet of krummhorns, two shawms, a cornetto, a baroque bassoon, six violas da gamba, one vielle, and a lute. The School also owns a clavichord, a single-manual French-style harpsichord, and a two-manual Flemish-style harpsichord, the latter two built by Richard Kingston. The Collegium Musicum is open to music majors and non-majors who share an affinity for early music.

Graduate Assistantships and Other Financial Support

Assistantships are available to qualified, full-time graduate students in the School of Music. Applicants must be admitted to the program, have an outstanding academic record, and present favorable recommendations. Assistantships provide tuition grants only and require approximately ten hours of work weekly. Musicology students are also eligible for the Michael M. Winesanker Scholarship, named for the late distinguished scholar who served the TCU School of Music for over 40 years, 25 of these as Chairman.
